We should support fishing communities

“In general I believe that resource management, environmental affairs including climate should be the centre of our develoment cooperation. I´m also in favour of community development and if we choose to focus on certain regions I think it is obvious for us Icelanders to turn to the fishing communities. We shouldn´t look at fisheries in a narrow technical sense, but rather focus on the approach we have been using in Uganda and Malawi: to support the fishing communities as a whole. The fish itself, the fishing and the processing shouldn´t necessarily be the point of focus but rather the communities who rely on fisheries for their subsistence. In our partner countries, the poorest groups are the fishing communities, so there we have a job to do. We should support them” says Árni Helgason, ICEIDA´s Country Director in Uganda, when asked about his views on Icelandic development cooperation.
