Mozambique: Iceland and Norway Participate in Action against Illegal Fishing

Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing, both in African sea and lakes, involve enormous foregone revenue for the poorest inhabitants of the continent. “ICEIDA´s and Norway's support to the Ministry of Fisheries in Mozambique includes actions against this exploitation” says Guðmundur Valur Stefánsson, ICEIDA´s Project Manager in Mozambique.

G. Valur says that through the Icelandic-Norwegian support, emphasis will be put on empowering fishing communities in Mozambique. “In most of these communities, community councils have been established. They are responsible for cooperating with the Ministry of Fisheries and INIP, the Fish Inspection Institute in relation to fish inspection, harvest control, fishery management and the development of surveillance capacity in order to fight IUU fishing. The aim is to increase the standard of living in those communities by strengthening the different parts of the value chain, from catch to market.
