Adult Education in Uganda - Newly Published Curriculum for English

Curriculum for practical English has recently been published with the support of ICEIDA in Uganda and it will be a part of the adult education in the country which Icelanders support. Instructors will be trained in the near future and the plan is to start using the new curriculum in the middle of the year. Lilja Dóra Kolbeinsdóttir, ICEIDA’s Project Manager in Uganda, estimates that in the beginning ten thousand people will benefit from the new curriculum.

“English is the state language in Uganda and all formal administration is in English, such as official documents, bank transfers and most services,” says Lilja Dóra. “On the other hand, English is the second language for most people in Uganda because various local languages are the native languages,” she adds.

The reason for the publication is that late last year ICEIDA in Uganda funded an auditing and the making of a new curriculum for practical English in adult education in Uganda. According to Lilja Dóra, the new curriculum is intended for those who have finished the basic studies in adult education. “It is intended for those who have already learnt to read and write and is based on needs assessments that were carried out nation-wide, especially though in the fishermen communities in Kalangala District on the Sesse Islands.

Lilja Dóra says that the endeavour with the curriculum is to advance practical knowledge and increase vocabulary and real examples are used, such as paper clippings, forms and reports from schools, banks and public records.

At first, the curriculum will be used in the capital Kampala and in the districts of Mukono and Kalangala where ICEIDA supports the implementation of the adult education.
