Background

Heath care authorities in Cabo Verde repeatedly asked for some Icelandic contribution to their sector. They pointed out that health standards in Cabo Verde were very low, and that especially basic heath care needed further input.

Objectives

The main objective was to build a health care post in the Fonte de Ines area in Mindelo. The main purpose of the health care post was to provide basic heath care for the people of the area (app. 8.000). Emphasis was to be put on mother and child care, reduction in child mortality, prevention of deceases such as leprosy, AIDS and tuberculoses, treatment of the most common diseases such as diahorrea and acute respiratory diseases. Moreover, vaccinations would be given and education in the prevention of diseases through better hygiene.

Contribution

ICEIDA pledged the amount of 50,000 US$ of which 700,000 CV escudos had already been disbursed to health authorities in Sao Vincente. The Government of Cabo Verde, through the town counsel of Sao Vincente, supplied suitable land for the building. Complete plans for the construction were provided by Vincente who will be in a charge of the implementation of the construction.

Methods

The Cabo Verde Government, through the town counsel of Mindelo and for the health Care Delegate of Sao Vincente, provided the land for the building and accepted plans for the health care post. It also hired a contractor for the job.
