·         Background

A project proposal was made in 1992 by an American Peace Corp volunteer in cooperation with IDEPE for improvement of the working situation of these women by making better equipment available to them. ICEIDA representative in Cabo Verde was approached among others to fund the project. ICEIDA indicated it's willingness to support the project but implementation was delayed.

·         Objectives

To assist fish-trading women in improving their income and livelihood through making better equipment available at a price they can afford.

·         Contributions

ICEIDA initially provided 200 specially designed fish storing boxes to be sold to fish-trading women at true cost on the basis of monthly installments. The price of each box was 12.00,00 C.V. escudos payable in cash or with 5,75 % banking interests in one to two years.

·         Methods

The ICEIDA P.C. demonstrated the boxes to fish-trading women, fist in Sao Vincente and then in other places in Capo Verde, and inform them on their price and availability. The boxes were sold through a credit line in charge of Institute for The Development of Fisheries (INDP), Banco Atlantico or some women's organizations in Cabo Verde. Funds coming in for these boxes were used to improve the living conditions of fish-trading women. An effort was made to integrate this project with a similar project which was carried out in Cabo Verde by INDP/FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization).
