Statement by Iceland (no 88 of 105)
Mr. President,
Iceland welcomes the delegation of Libya and its national report.
In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:
- Abolish the death penalty and ratify the Second Protocol to the ICCPR.
- Amend the Penal Code to criminalize all forms of violence against women and repeal discriminatory laws, including the male guardianship system, in line with international human rights standards
- Repeal article 375 of the Penal Code, which mitigates the penalties of so-called “honour crimes”
- Criminalize marital rape.
- Decriminalize and legalize abortion.
- Decriminalize same-sex relations between consenting adults.
- End discrimination against persons of diverse SOGIESC and revise laws restricting expression and association based on SOGIESC.
I wish Libya all success for its review.
I thank you.
